Haustiere/ Pets

Over the next few weeks we are going to be learning about animals. This week we will learn how to talk about pets by watching some short videos. Next week we will be writing some short sentences about our pets or a pet we would like to have. You might like to take some photos of your pets to show the students at Munkbrarup Primary School.

Watch this video to revise how to say the names of some pets in German. ( 2 minutes). Have a go at saying the words.

Task 1: Write the heading: What are the top 10 pets in Germany?
In a page in your book, list the numbers from 1-10 going down the page.
As you watch the video, write down the names of the pets in German and English.
This video also features pet animals from around the world. Which animal is from Australia? Are you surprised? This animal is a native animal from Australia and is not kept as a pet here.
Watch this video for the answers.( 8 minutes)

Task A: Visit the website Children of the World/de again and take a look at the section 'This is our favourite dish' for Germany and one other country of your choice. Click on the little flag in the top right hand corner to change the language to German. It should now look like this (see below). You can change between English and German whenever you like.

Write a list of the ingredients for one dish in English and German then make a list of the ingredients for YOUR favourite dish in English and German. You can use Google Translate to help you translate the ingredients. Make sure you set the language on the left to English and on the right to German. You can also hear how to pronounce the words by clicking on the speaker button.

Here are the websites you will need for Task A

Task B. Visit the link to the Postkarten page below and follow the instructions.

Task 2: This is our favourite dish/ Das ist unser Lieblingsgericht
Create a drawing/collage of your favourite dish. Don't forget to list the ingredients/Zutaten. Please put your work in your learning book.
Can you work out the ingredients for the following popular dish? Below is the recipe for Currywurst. Perhaps you can also include a recipe for your favourite dish!

THIS IS OUR FAVOURITE DISH

Germany is popular for its meat dishes like Schweinebraten (roast pork)
or sausages. As the northern part of the country borders the North and Baltic seas,
a speciality here are fish and seafood dishes. Germans also really love bread. There
are over 300 different types of bread. Bread is a big part of the German diet, and
usually eaten for breakfast and in the evening. The importance of bread (Brot) is
also reflected in words such as Abendbrot (supper, literally evening bread) and
Brotzeit (snack, literally bread time).

CURRYWURST

It is said that the Currywurst was invented in Berlin in 1949. A woman
who owned a takeaway wanted to try out a new recipe. It is a very
popular dish in Germany, especially in Berlin. Usually it’s served with
French fries.

Recipe:

What you need:
• a sausage
• a pinch of curry powder
• chopped onions
• tomato sauce

Take a knife and cut some slices in your sausage. Put it in a hot pan and
fry it. To prepare the sauce, fry some onions, add tomato sauce or
ketchup and flavour everything with curry, chilli, salt and pepper.
Once the sausage is done, put the curry-tomato sauce on it and you
have your own, tasty currywurst! Check out the video below.

End of Term 2

Week 8 Term 2

Hallo and I look forward to seeing you all next week. Last week you received the final part of the dance we have been learning. Keep practicing and I hope we can perform this dance together before the end of the term.
This week I want to tell you about a traditional dance form from southern Germany and Austria called 'Schuhplattler'. It is fun to watch and there is also a video called 'Tanz mit mir in Lederhosen' ( Dance with me in Lederhosen) where you can give it a try.

Schuhplattler
If you’ve ever seen a dance where male dancers in a line or circle are repeatedly hitting the soles of their shoes, their thighs, and their knees, this is Schuhplattler. This dance is one of the oldest dance routines in the world and is said to date back as early as 3000 BC, but it first appeared in recordings around the year 1030 by a monk in Bavaria. This dance was mostly performed in the Bavarian and Tyrolean Alps by farmers, hunters, and woodsmen. The male dancers wear lederhosen and suspenders with grey, green, or white knee-length socks, and the women wear dirndlsIn this video both the girls and boys wear lederhosen.

It was great last week to see some of the students and see how they were progressing with their dance. Looking forward to seeing you all in a couple of weeks!

Activity 2: Languages Online or Kinderuni
Spend 30 - 60 minutes on Languages Online or Kinderuni per week.  If you can, break this into 15 minute sessions 2- 4 times a week. A little bit of German language every day is better than one big session per week. It keeps the phrases in your brain and helps to take the knowledge from your short term memory into your long term memory. Always revise your previous learning. If you are a beginner, then work through the units and interactive tasks in order. If you feel confident with your German, skip ahead to units that interest and challenge you.

I would really like you to write down a list of all the interactive activities you have completed in Languages Online or Kinderuni so far and give them a star rating ( 5 stars is the best!)

Activity 2: Languages Online
Information for parents and students.
Languages Online is an online program for students beginning to learn languages. It is fun and engaging with interactive activities and printable worksheets.
Here is the link

Spend 30 - 60 minutes on Languages Online per week.  If you can, break this into 15 minute sessions 2- 4 times a week. A little bit of German language every day is better than one big session per week. It keeps the phrases in your brain and helps to take the knowledge from your short term memory into your long term memory. Always revise your previous learning.

Work through the units and activities in sequence if possible but skipping ahead is OK if there are any problems or if it is too easy. The units get progressively more difficult. Please note there are answers and translations for each unit.

For beginners (see the notes about navigating in Languages Online below)
  1. Go to German 1: Greetings and revise the Interactive Tasks 1-6
  2. Complete the print activity ‘Guten Abend’ (Good evening). Write the correct greeting in each speech bubble. Some of the greetings depend on the time of day. You can use ‘Hallo!’ and ‘Tschüβ’ at any time of day or night.
  3. Practice saying the different greetings. Teach them to members of your family and try to use them at the correct time of the day! eg. When it is bedtime you can say ‘Gute Nacht!’
  4. Work through interactive tasks for each topic going at your own pace but try not to skip any unless it is too hard or there is a glitch. There are answers and translations for each section and use these to help you complete the tasks. Having the answers is not cheating but an opportunity to learn and soon you won’t need them.
For those that feel more confident with their German.
Try the revision units.(Units 4,8,12 and 16) Go back if you don't understand anything in a revison unit.
Look for units that sound interesting or are going to challenge you!

Navigating around Languages Online
When you get into a section this is what is looks like. The answers and translations are at the bottom. At the top you can go to home, German topics, previous topics and next topic. You only need to work through the interactive tasks.

Once you choose an activity your page might look something like this.
  1. You can go to the next activity or back to the previous one.
  2. Read the instructions first.
  3. Here you will find how to spell the words you will need. In German the capital letters are important as well as the accent keys.
  4. Click on accent keys to open up a box on the right hand side that allows you to type in the letters with umlauts  ä, ö, ü and the Eszett –β.
  5. Write in the words here taking care to use the correct spelling (check the hints).
  6. Check your answer!

The accent key brings up a box that looks like this so that you can type the extra characters.

For those that want a real challenge.
